June was a challenging month for growing grass. There were a lot of fluctuations in weather which lead to high disease potential. As some of you may have noticed, a few of our greens were unsightly at times this June. The greens were infected with a very devastating disease called Pythium Root Disfunction. This disease was brought on by a combination of rain followed up by hot weather. This disease attacks the roots of the turf and inhibits the plants ability to uptake water and nutrients thus leaving the turf looking dead. Once the proper diagnosis was made, we were then able to contain the disease. We are continually repairing the infected areas. This process will take time before all the greens are back to normal so please bare with us for a while as we re-sod these dead areas. I hope this better explains what some of the dead spots on the greens are.
There are just a few projects for the month of July. The right and left sides of number 12 fairway are going to be brought in and turned into rough. These areas are low lying and tend to stay wet all year long. This procedure will change the appearance of the hole for the better. The bunkers on number 15 green were reshaped and new sand was added. The bunkers were too steep and did not hold sand along the edges. In the next couple of weeks we will begin cutting down select wetlands that interfere with play. The cattails get too tall and block the views of the greens on certain holes. This is something that is done on an annual basis.
Otherwise our maintenance practices will continue as normal for the rest of the July. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. As always I hope your experience at Wuskowhan is one to be remembered.
Sincerely,
Ryan Osborn
